White people who have spent decades thinking āBorn in the USAā is patriotic and āEvery Breath You Takeā is a great wedding song are suddenly very concerned about not being able to understand lyrics to some songs at the Super Bowl halftime show.

The fact that white nationalists feel a need to make a halftime show just for them communicates clearly that they understand safe spaces. They just donāt want anyone they deem āotherā to have one. Safety for me, not for thee. In that regard, they sure got the āAll-Americanā part right.

It is impossible to talk about civility without talking about power. The people deciding what is and isn't civil are often the same people who weaponize its use and shield those seeking to oppress while silencing those seeking to speak out against oppression. Civility is used to excuse/negate harm.

I shouldn't be shocked, but I'm still always brought up short to realize how many people think "civility" means "white people speaking in relatively calm voices" no matter what vile shit they say.

The belief that poverty and homelessness are about "individual choices" didn't arise on its own. It was manufactured through decades of messaging designed to protect the policies and interests that create mass precarity. As this new poll shows, that propaganda campaign has been wildly successful.

A new AP-NORC poll finds that most U.S. adults think personal choices are a major driver of poverty and homelessness, while fewer blame a lack of government support.

The summary is that they are trying to criminalize every aspect of homelessness so they can arrest & forcibly commit unhoused people. Currently(/before), there are not enough mental health & substance use treatment beds/facilities, and this does not add anything, which only leaves imprisoning people

If you have fears about homeless people in your neighborhood, I advise that you go talk to them. Bring a handful of twenties, if you can afford it, hand them out and talk to them like human beings. Youāll stop feeling as scared and start feeling sad and angry that people have to suffer needlessly.
