I want to very gently say something, and I hope nobody will be mad: If somebody on the internet says something that is NOT about politics and NOT about how terrible everything is, it’s a kindness not to reflexively make a comment (in jest or not) that brings it back to those things.

It’s always so funny when a bully experiences a reversal of fortune on Survivor from more power to less, and instead of deciding to be more cautious in the future about behavior that could backfire, they decide to be a much bigger bully and kind of … hope for the best?

I cannot tell you how much I long to know less about this entire situation (which is not in any way displeasure with anybody for sharing).

I think the situation room is for a particular kind of situation, not for situations generally, even though I agree that this is a situation.

I was saying to somebody yesterday: I suspect (but don't know for sure) that if you had a way to weight this by minutes published or listened to, it would be even more lopsided, given that a lot of the longest shows on my radar are hosted by men.

So this is an amazing story, which it turns out is (must be) the basis for the recent SVU episode with Danielle Macdonald that involves the doulas. It’s a sad, very bizarre tale. But there is one darkly funny detail that is just … you almost can’t believe it.

I get that black dress-up can be very chic, and in the case of this movie it’s probably supposed to be on-theme, but … yeah. All together, it doesn’t look chic. It looks a bit lazy, honestly. Nothing makes a great black dress vanish like a bunch of other black dresses.

The dog slept in, because he stayed over at daycare a few days while I traveled. He finally came downstairs. Had a drink of water. Jumped up on the couch and lay down. Stayed maybe two minutes. Went “nope,” got up, went back upstairs to pass out on the big bed. (Mine, technically.) He’s a hero.

This from Jen is good. I also listened to this podcast (on her rec) and in addition to everything she says, I was gobsmacked by how naive the host was about this guy EVEN AFTER being scammed by him.

I’m watching a home cook I enjoy on YouTube who decided to ask ChatGPT to write her a recipe for waffle batter and it completely flopped, not even close, wildly too runny, she had to add multiple cups of extra flour. I just don’t think it’s quite ready for war planning.

When you have rented for a long time and you want to own a house, one of the nice moments is that you realize you are building up equity. I bought my house as a middle-aged person; I may be pretty old when I pay it off. But I have some equity in it.

I’m not sure whoever chose the White Lotus quote for the lede in the auction description is aware that on the show, hearing his wife say this makes her husband consider whether she is so soft that if they’re not going to be as rich, he might be better off poisoning her.

It would be nice to not live in a world where people in both non-doofus jobs and doofus jobs didn’t run around trying to present themselves as terrifying bullies. It is baseball. All of you are rich. Suggesting you’ll put anybody in a ditch makes you sound like Matt Dillon in MY BODYGUARD.

I’ve had to do a little unexpected traveling this week and this boy is being so good while he stays over at daycare.

I will add: People who expected this teacher to be bummed do not know (good) teachers very well. A civics teacher? With a student who wants to run for office? That’s probably bliss.

What a great story.

Admitting that you don’t know enough about a landscape of references to use them in your work is about one one-thousandth as humbling as doing this. You do not have to be conversant in everything. You do have to understand the scope of your own knowledge and experience better than anyone.

One of the best shows in forever—achingly sad, hugely entertaining, and really REALLY thoughtful about important things like … the value of humanity. Really! And I gave away as little as I possibly could—almost nothing that’s not in the very opaque trailer.

If you believe, as I do, that Supreme Court justices are just a committee of lawyers who have political interests and personal motivations just like everybody else, seeing them more willing to be more openly skeptical yesterday than perhaps a week earlier is not surprising.

Watching Survivor in bed. Dog is zonked. I don’t know if the excitement level is really even responsible.

The question is whether this behavior violates the spirit and the muffuletta of the law.

I’ve been talking to friends about some of the things that made Mamdani’s campaign feel unusual to me (*aside* from the policies he was promoting), and I kept coming back to the fact that he seems to really like the city and like the people and enjoy being among them. (1/3)
