To be clear, the bad-faith right-wing attacks *are* real and have taken a toll on American HE since the 1960s, but theyāre not the full story and the root cause of the legitimacy crisis in 2026 is driven by student debt and the sense that universities have betrayed their promise of social mobility.

This narrativeāthat the only reason universities are experiencing a legitimacy crisis in the 2020s is because of bad-faith right-wing attacksāconveniently ignores the neoliberalization of higher education.

Itās a telling indicator of media desensitization that the US governmentās ongoing program of murder on the high seasāwhich according to the perpetrators has killed fourteen (14) people this weekā is no longer a subject for much serious or sustained news coverage.

This could apply to alot of things, but when people say "we want x" and politicians say "how about 50% of x, which won't really achieve anything, but it is half of what you asked!!!" it is not actually on those voters to clap

Worth thinking about how Schumer voted against the supermajority of his party in two back to back votes just now because he agrees with the Trump administration that Israel should be given unlimited, unconditional, essentially free military assistance.

The contrast couldn't be clearer. This city's organic public safety uprising was a large-scale effort to make it safe for marginalized people to be out and about in public places; the MPD is publicly declaring its commitment to make it unsafe for marginalized people to do the same. This is policing.

Itās hard not to see Vanceās criticism of the Popeās theological bona fides as just silly hubris. But I also see it as a stress test of sorts ā can they manipulate sentiment against a pontiff. Not for Trumpās interests. More likely for Thielās.

One of the worst things about social media (and this has greatly influenced the form taken by the present crisis) is that it convinces you that "people that annoy you" are a political bloc. I shouldn't know what most people think and there's lots of partners in struggle who may annoy me.

Itās exceedingly frustrating to talk with regular partisan Dems who focus on how to win an election that in all likelihood Dems will clean up in and then have them insist a bunch of things Dems should do in office that they donāt want them to even talk about in the meantime.
