I know I'm a broken record on this by now, but Skies of Arcadia continues to be a stone-cold *masterpiece*, a quarter-century after its release. I can't think of another game this old that I would recommend with no caveats. The fact Sega haven't re-released it on modern hardware is incomprehensible.

Reminder that "jaywalking" was literally made up by american car manufacturers to shift the blame for accidents from drivers to pedestrians. "Jay" was a slang term meaning "idiot" or "rube".

It's not that girls are weapons, actually. It's that weapons, as objects coveted by men who view the possession and conspicuous use of them as intrinsically demonstrative of their masculinity, are a type of woman.

Judge Biery signed the order with a photo of Liam and two bible verses: The first is "But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven." The second is simply "Jesus wept." Astonishing thing for a judge to do.

the primary blocker to UBI is the puritan belief that humanity is so sinful and depraved that it should not be permitted personhood unless it becomes 'civilised' that's how liberal social policy ended up asserting that helping people would harm them but hurting people would help them

You can test new tech ideas using the Seinfeld Test Would the product eliminate the plot of an episode? (Google maps, cell phones, paypal, battery packs) Good tech. Would the product inspire new Seinfeld plots? (NFTs, AI chatbots, crypto currency, blindboxes, metaverse land sales) Bad tech.

It is beyond weird to play Skies of Arcadia on original hardware and not hear the disc drive spin up before every random encounter. Next up, I'm thinking about replacing the fan—and maybe the clock battery, if I can get a soldering iron.

When I was translating Kon Satoshi, in order to understand him better I spent time reading his personal blog. I'll never forget him writing "They say what Aronofsky is doing is an "homage." I know my English isn't great, but I don't understand the difference between "homage" and being "ripped off."

The entire thesis of this (excellent) article is encapsulated in this sentence: "When it comes to assessing videogames, AI cannot outwrite me; it cannot even burn the roof of its mouth on mashed potato." Still worth reading the whole thing, obvs.

I do wish we could report about countries like China like they’re modern, sophisticated (if authoritarian) places rather than something you’d do in the compendium for a JRPG. “The Empire of the Jade Dragon 🐉 has an obscure and many-faceted bureaucracy run under the auspices of the Protocol Deity”

I don't know enough about the devs to know if it's a deliberate omission or just a coincidence, but the fact that Made in Abyss isn't noted as an influence on The Eternal Ruins seems very unusual to me, given the art style, tone and central concept.

This plan for free AI training is mind boggling to me. Even if putting aside some of my concerns around widepsread consumer GenAI use, if we have resources to provide free tech/web focused training to adults, there's a basic floor of skills we can look at before teaching folk to give OpenAI business

Maybe I'm being pedantic, but I don't think you should be allowed to call your delivery service "Tracked 48" unless you're going to actually deliver it within 48 hours. "Two to three business days" is up to 120 hours, over a weekend! That's two and a half times 48!
