Anyway I don’t know why a bunch of people are talking about game writing but I also tend to think a lot about how in games, genres are things like ‘rogue-like’, and not things like ‘romcom’ and I like to start there with my lens: what is serving what. And to what effect etc.

maybe I’m jaded but when devs say a game has good writing it’s bc they can see how crushingly hard it was to make that type of game and they’re subtextually suggesting they cannot believe anyone managed to wrangle the thing into something that personally moves them to any emotion???

Generally speaking I find when the players of games say the game has a ‘good story’ it means they vaguely want to know what happens next which drives them through whatever game business they have to do, and when they say it’s ’good writing’ they usually mean the writing flatters the player char
