Today I tried more ideas to optimize the software renderer prototype for #Playdate and got it into playable FPS. I need to adjust the lighting since I modified the render resolution, it looks more busy than it should, but I'm happy with the progress.

Ending 2025 composing on my Yamaha, inspired by the awesome Myst soundtrack, I'm trying to find built-in voices in this keyboard that could work for an eerie, mysterious atmosphere.

Did more optimization work on my Playdate prototype. Still slow and the recording is using parts that are still not optimized (lightmap, edge draw, etc) so there's still room for optimization. I'm not sure if I will continue working on this next year... we will see!

Let's try to optimize my render and see how many FPS can I get on the Playdate. Right now it runs great on the simulator, not so much on the device (~4 FPS). I'll start with some culling and removing the extra steps I added while learning how to draw this...

I ran some tests on the Playdate to find out what the slowest part of my software renderer is. And as always with software renderers, I found out that texture rasterization is the bottleneck.

Tried a quick optimization just to check if what I'm trying to do is possible on the Playdate. FPS is still low but it's now playable and with the crank the rotation control is great. I think that if I do some spyro-kind-of-texture-mapping-optimization plus a better vis job it can get much better!

I got my software render working (somehow) in playdate. It's using quake bsp for the map generation/loading. I quickly realized that in order to not have to work for months doing tooling it was best to just use community tools 😅 This was just a proof of concept, it needs to be actually optimized.

I just found a bug with the #playdate simulator I was getting mad because I couldn't understand why some textures wouldn't render with my code... Ended up testing it in the device: notice the big checkerboard texture missing in the simulator? Glad that for once it's not my fault 😂
