If you didn't catch the names in PTA's speech, the 1975 Best Picture nominees are Barry Lyndon, Dog Day Afternoon, Jaws, Nashville, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. There are no skips; there is no wrong place to start. They will make you love American movies anew, and demand the best from them.

The thing about old movies is sometimes you’ll be watching a comedy about some showgirls tricking old men out of their money and then in the middle of it they drop one of the most breathtaking musical sequences ever committed to film.

Honestly? Living in Alabama. When you live between Selma and Birmingham and Tuscaloosa, it is fairly impossible to fall into the "this is the worst it has ever been and it can't get better" pit. It was way worse for people here, in living memory, and they didn't shrug & give up. So I can't either.

Been working my way through Ingmar Bergman’s movies (probably not the best idea for a person with diagnosed depression!) and just got to The Virgin Spring. Simultaneously one of the darkest and most beautiful movies you’ll ever see.

if your ideology is based on the idea that it is justifiable to prey on the weak there isn't going to be a meaningful boundary you can draw between looting from the poor and sexually exploiting kids. i don't think every conservative is a pervert but that is the logical conclusion of their beliefs
