Played and enjoyed Still Wakes the Sea, about a 1975 Scotsman's worst day on the oil rig. Fun way to spend 4 or 5 atmospheric hours trying not to die (no combat, only light puzzles and navigation). It's also a Christmastime game!

It's very easy: Just don't. The idea that Copilot or ChatGPT are suddenly essential tools is just buying into the corporate ad blitz. Games were made just fine (well, relatively) up through...what, 2023? 2024? They didn't suddenly become VITAL for budgets or design docs in the last 2-3 years.

A reminder that The Escapist that people remembered does not exist anymore. Almost all the core staff packed up and left. Most reformed as Second Wind, which is doing decent work. The Escapist now exists to promote online gambling and act as a mouthpiece for unhinged venture capitalists. Let it die

AI Bro from yesterday blocked me. I get that he was upset that people mocked his profession and said it was bad and useless. There’s no way that would ever happen to me, someone with a theater degree

Enjoying Still Wakes the Sea. Not selling me on being a Scottish oil rig worker in the 70s. Kinda wish the subtitles didn't translate meaning of the speech instead of simply transcribing it, seems like context is enough to get it.

Law professors: let your students use AI so they can experience for themselves in a controlled environment the multitude of reasons why they can't be asleep at the wheel. It's either your classroom or the courtroom.

“AI isn’t going away” is just “everything will be on the blockchain” all over again. Prophesizing, manifesting. Trying to justify those investments.

I hate Waymo cars so much even without the part where they run over neighborhood pets. Every time I see one it's uncanny, like realizing the animal I just touched is actually a taxidermy.

it is almost Christmas which means it’s Muppet Christmas Carol season and that, in turn, means it is time to revisit this delightful interview with Michael Caine, who loves everything about that movie even more than you do

In litigation, when one side destroys evidence, the judge orders the jury to presume that it was destroyed because it was harmful to that party. Thing is, that's just a codification of what people presume naturally in such instances. It's a legal right to go with your gut. As everyone will here.

The rule should not be chosen based on who it excludes. If the rule means that the output of an entire publishing house, which goes AI-edit forward in 2026, is excluded, the rule is functioning as intended.

2) when deciding if a clear rule is a GOOD rule, the absolute last thing you should be doing is crafting a rule and then looking to see if it excludes people you like and respect and frantically redrafting it if it does so that those people are eligible for your contest

So, SFWA is very much not my circus, not my monkeys, but here are my two general thoughts right now: 1) clear rules excluding AI-created content are important to hold the line, especially for publishers who would want nothing more than to toss their editors into the drink.
