Every once in a while I beg certain comic book artists out there to please consider drawing their characters' mouths open more often when they are speaking/emoting. Indy, artsy and mainstream. Your endlessly tight-lipped bad actors are dead on the page, killing dialogue and snuffing emotion.

I'm retouching strips for Hogan's Alley #25. A friend suggested I use AI to restore the work. I said no, but I was curious to see what it would do, so I sent him a sample. The top is the restored source material, and the bottom is the AI "restoration." And that, dear reader, is why I don't use AI.

A notable feature of AI is that it has changed the nature of what feels amateurish. It used to be that a poster made by someone who didn’t know what they were doing would be comic sans on clipart, which was at least charming. Now it’s that creepy Ghibli-knockoff style and lots of greebly overdetail.
