If you begin Star Trek: Voyager episode Spirit Folk at exactly 11:49:35 on New Year's Eve, Ensign Harry Kim will kiss a cow as the clock strikes midnight. Join in a very dumb annual tradition and start 2026 off on the right hoof.

Will note: this is probably the direct result of workshy Bari Weiss waiting until Friday before a Sunday air date to spike the story. International rebroadcasters probably get the recordings early to vet locally and run through local standards and practices. She forgot and no one told her :)

the government should not be forcing state agencies to have "an AI component" to anything, generative AI is an unreliable and unproven new technology, there's literally no justification whatosever for a whole-of-government embrace of its use

The Odyssey trailer is putting me in mind of classic film sword and sandal epics. Like for some reason the late period Robert Siodmak movie he made when he went back to Germany with Orson Welles as Emperor Justinian I

The Last Roman - Trailer
(1968 Anamorphic Widescreen) Laurence Harvey, Orson Welles, Sylva Koscina, Honor Blackman, Robert Hoffman, Michael Dunn, and Lang Jeffries. Directed by Robert Siodmak. Disc One: Kampf um Rom I. It’s not long after the fall of the Western Roman Empire (early 500s AD). One of the last Roman leaders, Cethegus (Harvey), makes a bid to return Rome to its former greatness. He tries to incite a conflict between the various Goth leaders, who now rule Rome. The idea is to get military aid from Byzantine Emperor Justinian (Welles) and then subdue whoever’s left. The Honor Blackman bathtub scene is a whopper. Disc Two: Kampf um Rom II, Der Verrat: Cethegus gets a war started between the Ostrogoths and the Byzantine Empire, but when the Byzantine army invades Italy to reconquer Rome, a budding romance threatens to ruin Cethegus’s lofty plans. This was one of the last big sword and sandal epics of the 1960s (it was actually quite late in the game), but a big cast helps make this an intriguing peplum thriller. Lots of sword fights and battle scenes, some of which are quite well done. Both discs run just a few minutes shy of three hours. New English Subtitles. Great color, 35mm. The RDA said the Na’vi keep killing all their soldiers/whalers so I asked how many soldiers/whalers they have & they said they just get more soldiers/whalers sent from Earth afterwards so I said it sounds like they’re just feeding soldiers/whalers to Na’vi and then they started crying.

These are all wonderful. But even above the iconic Russell artwork is the unauthorized 1971 set by the Mad Prince of French illustrators: the magnificent Philippe Druillet. Druillet's Elric vanished in lawsuits, with many of the pieces resurfacing in his astonishing if incoherent Yrgael/Urm The Mad

You know how in Murder, She Wrote, Jessica Fletcher is always going to the aid of her niece or school friend’s daughter or whatever in sorts of locations? There should be a modern mystery series where someone is going to the aid of all their internet friends all over the world.

Back when I was childless, I could be vaguely dismissive of art aimed at kids that I found good-not-great, and now that I _have_ a child, I'm, like, "Frozen is an American masterpiece because at least it's not this weird fucking computer slop my kid found deep in the bowels of Netflix."

You know I'm okay with Potter not being punished in A Wonderful Life. Guys like him don't lose, not really (not normally anyway) George Bailey's legacy was to make many people's lives materially better, not upend the social order. The whole ending feels more earned that way.

I'm very partial to a lot of the classic era Yamato stuff, so 'movie made by a lot of the same team sans Leiji Matsumoto but pretty similar' has a fundamental appeal I should circle around to at some point.

Something that bugs me a little way is whenever someone says the latest micro-event du jour will 'be in the history books.' Did you read those things? They don't have the blow by blow of like every Know Nothings screed in the 1840s. History books are gonna distill these years into Big Picture notes

It can't be a primary source, and wouldn't tell us anything about a secondary source we wouldn't already know or be able to find easily. That's before we get to the "it's a black box drawing from an unknown provenance that routinely invents fake sources" problem.
