AT&T's attempt to acquire WB ran afoul of Trump, who tried to block it so Rupert Murdoch could buy WB and gain CNN. It took three years of legal challenges and trials before the merger went ahead. Ellison will definitely be stymied until after the midterms, and maybe all the way to 2028.

Even if Warner Bros Discovery goes ahead with the plan to spin off TNT, TBS and CNN into a new company, the details of the merger will be so tied up for so long that Ellison might not get a chance at CNN until after the next Presidential election. Remember, it took three years for AT&T to buy WB.

The essence of the Netflix/WB deal is that Larry Ellison got into a pissing contest with David Zazlav over South Park and Friends reruns and Zazlav took it personally. Zazlav has been desperate since day one of the WB/Discovery merger to be Mr. Big Media CEO Man, and hates being seen as a joke.
