someone asked to see it in motion so i made a video i just edited the model shader so everything that isn't a full block is gold so things look a bit weird. and the grass is shell textured so those are just horizontal planes anyway plz enjoy

anyone got any tips for adding in materials to a shader without breaking batching? do i just add a material index in the vertex data and branch off of that or is that a terrible idea i've never had to deal with this before. it's easy with entities cause they're not really batched anyway

ok i've fixed the reflections and all artifacts and discontinuities and this is what i've got it also works in the dark, i reduce the matcap's speculars by the overall luminance of the scene and it's even got makeshift mirrors :D (also yes all the grass and plants are gold, just roll with it)

help i cant stop playing with it

The next matcaps thing I wanna try is dynamic/animated matcaps. Since matcaps are just images of spheres, and I have a spherize filter... well, I can just move a faux sphere around a flat texture and use that as a matcap and do all sorts of vfx that way

ok i don't understand reflect. these are the y components of the view normal, and the reflected direction from the camera to the view position along the view normal the normals are pointing down at the bottoms of the central slats, so why is the reflected direction pointing up at the bottom?

ok, i've got a back view (limited to 1 chunk radius) rendering, with very high FOV and then spherized so i can use this as a matcap for reflective materials in the world

I'm tired of hoping things will be better every new year so this year I'm just gonna focus on the fact that things are at least sort of ok for me right now

i know some people really like chisel mods/features in block games but i've been watching vintage story videos lately and oh my god it looks so tedious

so my idea is to render the camera back view with high fov, spherize it, and then use the resulting faux matcap as a cheap stand-in for spherical environment map reflect view ray for each fragment, sample the matcap using direction will it be accurate? no. will it be convincing enough? who knows!

i've written the transparency accumulation/reveal render pass for the weighted blended order independent transparency and it seems to be working! \:D/ no sorting required! now i gotta fix everything that's broken >_> like the 3d cursor, the block breaking overlay, drop sprites, and inventory icons

So happy I got this done, I've been dreading it for ages. I'd say "and then I did it in one day" but that's kind of ignoring the weeks of research that preceded writing the actual code lol

fun fact: the game logic in block game is completely separated from windowing, input, data, and rendering i could replace the way data's loaded (block/entity info) completely, or replace the entire renderer, or switch to a different engine entirely and the game logic would never need to be altered
