The one thing that makes something an imsim is the default interact button. Is it a mouse button? Imsim. Keyboard key? Not imsim. Myst and Minecraft are imsims, PREY is not. Excel, believe it or not, is an imsim.

not every random encounter system is that one final fantasy I dungeon with a corridor that's programmed to trigger a fight every step!! games like Etrian Idyssey and SMT Strange Journey had some banger random encounter systems imo

random encounters can be good, actually one thing i intend to do for You Have Died is to scale down the rate of random encounters in areas of the dungeon you've been too before. so stuff like backtracking out of a dead end isn't as annoying

doesn't look like much but i had to do so much work to make this work (arena allocator, scene management system overhaul and more) anyway, now i can push a battle scene onto the scene stack in you have died, with a customizable transition, and then pop it back off the stack to return to the dungeon

memory arenas are great. in You Have Died when a scene is allocated, it first creates a memory arena for all the things that have a lifetime of that scene which includes the scene itself, so that struct also gets allocated in the arena and automatically cleaned up when the arena is freed so tidy 💜
