This puts Mamdani in good company. Back in 2012 I covered a conspiracy conference in DC about Obama called āLenin and Shariaā that argued Obama was simultaneously a devout Muslim agent of sharia AND a godless communist.

Wacom recently asked me to talk about why I make queer comics, and given there are multiple bills right now floating around in congress that are effectively "we will kill your livelihood if we get a sniff of queer" I had some pretty strong, simply feelings to relay.

people do not understand how govt works. they dont know how the day to day wrangling affects them. its on our leaders to do this job. in an ideal world the media would do this. they won't. so its on elected leaders. so fucking do it.

Oliver continues to be right here. Folks blow my mind with "why do good things when it'll get blocked?" mentality. Do good things, esp when popular, sell it hard, let them block the good things, and sell that narrative hard. dont negotiate yourself to failure w/bad faith actors

Amazing how when Democrats held majorities in both chambers of Congress the Republican minority was able to block 95% of bills but when the roles are reversed, a Democratic minority has blocked less than 5% of bills that Trump wants passed.

better to do it week one, get the court on record opposing it, and run on that than spend weeks wanking in public over it, building opposition and losing the argument. which is what biden did. bidens proposal was good. delaying it was dumb. they both did good things and refused to take the "w"

The funny thing is now that there have been some high profile progressive victories, Cletus Safaris to understand why Democratic primary voters made the choices they did actually would be useful! Instead, theyāre talking to professional Democrats who are on the losing side.

I think there's actually a useful difference we can draw here. Namely: there is incrementalism that comes from pushing wherever possible (and with whatever levels possible) to make progress toward a maximalist demand, versus incrementalism that's positioned as an excuse for setting minor goals

I know donors would love to see him defend himself against the tax on the debate stage as everyone piles on him. And he'd probably love that, too. Given his embrace of Biden, I think he's decided to take Joe's path to the nomination. The difference is Joe would never have blown a gimme like this.

1. obama and biden both had congressional majorities 2. biden spent months vacillating on student loans instead of just fucking doing it (obama did same with dadt) 3. if biden and obama did popular things there would be no serious move to impeach but that's a convenient excuse for not trying

those of us at the tail end of gen x saw the promise of "get a job in your twenties and work there until retirement and get a big fat pension at the end" evaporate and it affected how we view economics. things have gotten way worse since and we dont think povs will change?

we had the dotcom collapse, the great recession and covid. somehow people are very surprised that the 80s/90s church of "trust the market" is losing followers, especially among the people who went through those things in their teens and twenties.

one key difference between left and right is liberals are mostly fine with being nerds. the aspiration to be cool is just not there the same way it is with the right. thats why they do the most cringeworthy things to try and be cool -- which ends up as the most uncool move of all.

Every time somebody like Obama or Biden wins, they take their own victory as proof enough that The Country Has Turned A Corner, that The Fever Has Passed, and it's Time To Work Together With Our Republican Friends In Unity again, and it's a goddamn disaster b/c no, none of that has happened.

Imagine if Obama and Biden had come in like Trump and project 2025. Just a blizzard of progressive stuff and orders undoing all the gop rot. Instead they both pursued way too much unity and bipartisanship. Voters gave them both a mandate and they made milquetoast.
