In all likelihood, you may not be fully conscious of what your theme actually is until you've at least written a first draft. This is art, not science; you have to feel your way. Hence the need for story sense. But these kinds of tools can help light the way.

If you find yourself endlessly stuck and spinning your wheels on a particular scene, it's probably because you should just cut it. I speak from painful experience. Is the scene a) moving the story forward and b) dramatising your theme? If not, put it out of its misery.

Think fractally; i.e. each slice (however big or small) expresses the same dramatic question that underpins your overall theme. E.g. if your theme is, "What is the price of freedom?" -- each arc, issue, and scene should express, wrestle with, and dramatise-via-conflict that underlying theme.

Figure out the broad strokes of each of the big wedges; the whole pie. Then start with Wedge 1; slice it into 5 issues. Slice issue 1 into sequences; then scenes; then pages; etc.

Okay, so you have, say, a 30-issue pie. Slice it into 6 wedges (i.e. arcs, each collectable as a trade paperback). Each arc is a satisfyingly self-contained sub-story (i.e. beginning middle end); with each arc combining to make a satisfying whole.

Anyone can learn the basic tenets of storytelling craft, but you can't teach someone to have a *sense of story* -- any more that you can teach someone to have a sense of humour, or a sense of direction. Editors with a sense of story are rare and precious, and must be protected at all costs.

Slice it like a pie. Start with a sense of the whole thing; then slice it up into issues; then sequences; scenes; pages; beats; panels; lines. You only have to write one slice at a time. But you need to be able to see the whole pie.
