I’m a headphones nerd but have always been skeptical of earbuds. Recently though, I tried two new models: Powerbeats Pro ($170) and Soundcore’s Sport X20 ($80). To my surprise—and mostly because of a much superior app—I found that the cheaper Sport X20 had better sound. What do you think?

I don't know about other writers, but for a day or two after finishing a book I have no idea what to do with myself. I just sort of wander around like a lost dog.

It's done. I said I'd finish it today and I actually did. Sandman Slim 13—IN THE DEVIL WIND—the book I swore I'd never write, is finished. I'm too tired to even write a cover letter, so I'll send it in tomorrow. Right now, it's cocktail time.

My friends and I spent so many 3, 4, 5 am mornings in Denny's coming down from whatever insanity we'd survived the evening before. Denny's was a blessed oasis in the vast desert of night. I hope it will still be there for all the 20 and even 30-somethings who need it. They've lost so much already.

Another lost photo found in my archives: the Las Vegas hotel where I finished SANDMAN SLIM. Vegas can be a great place to vanish for a while because if you don't gamble and stay out of the Spearmint Rhino you can live there on the cheap. I still sometimes hide in hotels to work.

I just spent the morning recovering data from broken text files. A real pain in the ass, but at least I was able to grab the words. Now to import them all into Scrivener. That's another pain in the ass, but it's better than losing notebooks which, yes, is something I've done.
