In a functional society, the types of people active in the Trump administration could not gain power, let alone keep it as they engage in brutal, criminal behavior. Trump is a symptom, not the sum of our problem.

My gosh — After Israeli forces tear-gassed this kid, making him collapse, other soldiers then "detained the ambulance carrying Aysam from the Beita Emergency Center to Nablus for several minutes, interrogating the driver about Aysam’s injury, location, and cause before it was allowed to continue."

The federal workforce was shut down and shut out of our work for no reason at all. Workers endured fear & hardships in hopes healthcare could remain affordable. Hard choices and serious consequences befell federal workers and their loved ones. A month and a half of suffering, to get nothing.

The contrast could hardly be sharper. My friends and neighbors, armed only with whistles and voices, spend their weekend fighting off heavily-armed paramilitary goons. Meanwhile, these jagoffs capitulate, but not before securing another $1 billion for their own security.

At some point we have to let pain hurt Trump instead of helping him. Every time we let pain help him, he’ll do more and bigger next time. Each acquiescence means the next one will be *more* painful.

I’m hearing a lot of despair and “what’s the point”-ing. Here’s the point: ONE less person kidnapped by ICE. ONE more child vaccinated. ONE grant reinstated. ONE more PEPFAR treatment. ONE more meal to a hungry kid. ONE more person covered by Medicaid. One life is ALWAYS worth resistance.

40 men Trump sent to CECOT tell the NYT they were beaten, tortured, and sexually assaulted. The details are worse than you can imagine. We can’t let them get away with this. Miller and the other architects of this sadism need to go to prison.

Not ICE. Border Patrol. They’re wearing Border Patrol uniforms with clear Border Patrol patches on them. There are many videos of ICE officers doing outrageous stuff but a lot of the absolute worst videos are of Border Patrol, who are basically Bovino and Miller’s most aggressive tool right now.

There had better be trials. And not just for the low-level thugs carrying out these orders, but for everyone up the chain of command. If we get past this, the solution isn’t to pretend it never happened and invite Stephen Miller to Harvard’s Institute of Politics. It’s trials w real punishments.

The moment he was given the power to do so, he killed as many people of the most vulnerable as possible. He did it gleefully and bragged about it. He's proud of it. I can't think of any consequence too severe for it, or any punishment he doesn't deserve. And yet here we are.

There are people who are never mentioned except in the context of their crimes against humanity. Musk will be one someday, but it should be today. Every article about SpaceX, Neuralink, Twitter that isn't really about why a mass murderer is in this position in our society is a failure.

It’s almost like if people tell you that to win you have to turn your back on poor people, or Muslims, or trans people, or immigrants, you can just say, “no, that’s immoral, we’re not doing that,” and keep doing good old fashioned organizing and campaigning and things will be ok

These are good odd year wins. That said, a political system that oscillates between a liberal party and an increasingly fascist party will continue to degrade and move right. We still need movement orgs and political leaders to embrace year-round democracy and deep reform. Hope they can get there.

When you say something is a distraction, you are not-very-implicitly scolding anyone who makes a big deal out of it: You’re a sucker! You fell for the trick! When the putative distraction is some egregious breach of political norms or actual laws, you are helping normalize and minimize the breach.
