South Carolina electoral math is pretty brutal. I recall a Dem operative there saying it sometimes looks like you’re only a few points away but that’s your peak because you’ve run out of reachable Dem voters. Obviously doesn’t mean it’s not worth fighting, it’s just an edge case.

Genuine question: is Katz a DSA member and can members be kicked out? This is downstream of a broader problem which is that there’s (rightfully) no way to stop someone from doing political work except for voluntarily disassociating with them.

IMO, a mass membership base could vote on stuff like this, including who gets invites, format and topics. Agreed that corporate media outlets are ill-suited to helping party voters make informed decisions

The unifying theme here is that the party has no formal mechanism for investigating and punishing abusers, forcing victims and victim advocates to self-organize accountability, largely through media coverage.

Extremely telling detail from this WSJ piece about Platner's demise: "Women on the campaign told Platner he was being managed by advisers who treated them unfairly and didn’t value their ideas," with one telling him point-blank "Hey, you have a very sexist, misogynistic staff."

An issue here is that established candidates didn’t want to take on Mills. Plenty of meh senators are also dodging primary challenges. There *should* be infrastructure to support candidates taking YOLO runs statewide but it shouldn’t be run by cranks and dilettantes. Good luck raising $ though.

If you’re skeptical of the insurgent tactics that fueled Platner, you should want the Dem establishment to embrace partisan procedural hardball, to regain credibility with Dem voters. And you shouldn’t feign naïveté about what it means to “fight” or about where *opposition* to hardball is strongest.

To add: All accusations underscore the need for parties themselves to sponsor independent systems for investigating sexual misconduct. Forcing victims to go public through the press or deal with the judicial system is an incredibly unfair burden.

Really big difference between coalition-builder mindset and burn-it-down stuff like this. So much of what Platner and his campaign are doing, even in finally withdrawing, will ultimately alienate a fraction of supporters from his replacement.
