For a certain kind of pundit, it's important to establish that all present evils are traceable to previous Democratic failures - preferably failures rooted in the naive pursuit of lofty progressive ambitions. When no such failure exists, sometimes one must be simply invented from thin air.

I think that’s not true in most polls, but also, he’s shut down the government, is acting like a lunatic, is invading US cities, and BULLDOZED THE WHITE HOUSE. I think it takes some work to survey what’s happening in America and go “Ah ha! The main thing is the cost of onions!”

Most voters are like that, it's just that their "principles" are shaped very differently, in ways that almost seem like non-Euclidean geometry from the perspective of the politics-aware, but which make total sense if you think about, say, rival sports/music fandoms, or about "office politics".

This is not true! If you sincerely believe this, try to trace out the implications - e.g., would a candidate who held prices flat for a year be extremely difficult to beat? would areas with higher price changes shift more? - and test them against the real world. I promise you your theory will fail.

To be clear, while this is likely true, I don’t think any voter is obliged to pick their own leaders with some other jurisdiction’s voter’s in mind. Seems anathema to the concept of democratic self-governance. If Minneapolis had wanted a DSA mayor it has every right to have one.
