Reading reviews of CASTRATION MOVIE is maddening to me because modern reviewing is so shallow: like yes it's a movie about trans people but it's also a challenging piece of experimental film outside of its subject matter? Surely people can find more to say about it than "Vera Drew was there."

To be clear, this is not a post dunking on Criterion or any other DVD label. Film preservation is a good thing. This is more an encouragement to disentangle capitalism from how you value art. A movie is not better or worse because Criterion liked it. Do you like it? Do you know why you like art?

The thing about Criterion releasing K-POP DEMON HUNTERS is that it is a boutique DVD label that exists to make money. It has a curated catalogue because outsourcing curation attracts people with money. They do good work but their nod of approval is no more meaningful than Arrow or Vinegar Syndrome.
