It’s fascinatingly odd (and Deep Red still feels like a bolt of lightning in comparison), but there’s something very rich in the unironed and haphazard creativity of Argento’s Four Flies on Grey Velvet (1971). Unfinished sensibilities, still-sharpening visual wit, an imaginative identity coalescing.

George Romero’s Creepshow (1982) is about as perfect a distillation of Halloween laughs and (joyful) shrieks as you could want, and Michael Gornick’s Suspiriaesque vibrancy is incredible on 4K. Embarrassed I haven’t seen it before, a firecracker that kinda clears most every horror anthology since!

The interest in watching Argento finally chew on Corman’s Poe cycle so directly at the very hilt of his stylistic decline is worth the admission, but I’m really tickled with how Romero’s turns itself around. Great effects, great gore and splatter.

It’s not either filmmaker at their most cinematic (Romero’s especially feels stunted before the pretty fucking awesome finale), but the made-for-TV snugness contrasted with eruptions of hideous gore and violence rocks. Adrienne Barbeau (Romero’s) and Harvey Keitel (Argento’s) are both SO good!

Two Evil Eyes (1990) is SUCH a wonderful curio, two horror auteurs completely ill-matched to remake Roger Corman’s Tales of Terror. Romero’s M. Valdemar is pure Tales from the Crypt cheese, Argento’s The Black Cat is a precursor (and every bit as cruel) to Showtime’s hateful Masters of Horror.

“Same old” Hong Kong supernatural martial arts is still jaw-dropping shit thrown at you with enough intensity and speed to liquify you against a wall, so there’s no shortage of cheers and gasps in this thing’s near-sprint through its own runtime. Plays the Tsui Hark and Ching Siu-tung game well!

Crammed about as tightly into Brigitte Lin’s final year as you could possibly get it, Deadful Melody (1994) is something of a Been There Done That backwoods wuxia that still passionately relishes its own special effects and rapidfire cutting. Brigitte is, as always, beauty and brutality manifest.
