Update: The US Auto industry has retreated from EVs. That strategy will relegate them to the domestic market only or to extinction. The world is shifting to EVs. Global sales of fully internal combustion engine vehicles peaked in 2017. š§Ŗšš”āļøšØš§š Paywalled link:

People tend to think of functional illiteracy as just being unable to read words aloud or such. What it *really* means is such as not being able to perceive subtext, context, understand who the audience of something may be, etc. Media illiteracy is fundamentally part of functional illiteracy.

And that, I suppose is my fundamental takeaway: Trump foolishly opened a door he cannot now close. He did so without Congress, without the constitutional process and we now all have to live with the consequences. Honestly, that ought to be a capital crime. It many countries, it would be.

What I find interesting about this line is that itās an admission in order for this to happen, they need you to lose your ordinary intelligence that you already have. This is why they want to get into schools. They want kids to lose basic capacity so that they have to rent it forever.

This is to say: if you're an attorney who's hesitated to take on habeas cases because you think you lack the knowledge, or you're worried about whether you'll really help, I PROMISE you can make a difference. I'm just a dipshit with a 7-year-old laptop and a bad attitude. If I can do it, so can you.

Sorry I'm not more open-minded about LLMs, it's just some fucking maniacs shoveled out a bunch of useless bloatware featuring that technology, did not give me any chance to opt out, reorganized the entire economy around it, zeroed out gains made by green energy, and made it impossible to buy RAM

imo this isn't the biggest problem w/ the story. yeah there will be some people who do this, but they were already doing that stuff. the bigger issue is the fact that Wildlight presented as a fully solvent studio, had Tencent backing and still folded like a card table after launch, likely on purpose

'the company that maintains my boyfriend's AI persona has jacked up the price ten-fold' is pretty classic cyberpunk; that the persona or the relationship never meaningfully existed in the first place is a level of bitter irony that might be too much even for an often ironic genre.

You know things are bad when the WSJ puts it this plainly: "The rewards are going toward capital instead of labor. Profits have soared since the pandemic, and the market value attached to those profits even more. The result: Capital is triumphant, while the average worker ekes out marginal gains."

Corporations will not exploit working people in NYC. Uber Eats, Fantuan & HungryPanda broke the law ā shortchanging workers while raking in profits. Today, we secured $5M+ in restitution for 49,000 delivery workers. Let this be a warning: steal wages, face the consequences.

As someone who spent the last 15 years working with aging brains & dementia, I can't stop thinking about this. It is gerontocracy: leaders who are substantially older than most of the adult population. When did we accept this? The new generations can't show up because the old generations never left.
