if you are having an acutely difficult time with what is happening in the news, there are some fairly decent coping strategies on this list if 5% of the list works for you, you'll have a decent library of tools to pull from be well, be strong we will win

There is a faction of Americans who are fine with people being shot for disobedience to authority. The penalty for trafficking drugs is not death The penalty for resisting arrest is not death The penalty for disobeying law enforcement is not death The penalty for civil disobedience is not death

Remember: "Deportations"/kidnappings to CECOT could not have happened without dehumanization of incarcerated people at home. Think about how the definition of crime & criminal has been expanded in 2025-Anyone can be subjected to this. Also this should NOT be done to those labeled criminals either

The reason you go scorched-earth on this is the same reason we should have gone scorched-earth on impoundment; you can't stop it from happening, but you absolutely need to stop it from becoming a normal part of politics. You have to draw a line.

This is a lie and bullshit. This is the same bullshit Disney pulled at it's parks. Making things ACCESSIBLE costs them money. So it's much better to astroturf this issue, make some shitty people think oh cool a hack I can use, get everyone else mad Then you can cut accessibility.

Bad framing: ACIP voted to scrap the universal hepatitis B vaccine recommendation for newborns. Accurate framing: Anti-vax conspiracy theorists appointed to ACIP by Robert Kennedy Jr., who made a fortune as an anti-vax profiteer, voted to expose babies to a preventable, incurable, deadly illness.

This is one of many decisions that only makes sense if you see the court as a political body, where six Republicans are willing to overturn a well reasoned District Court opinion with a 2.5 page opinion, with the likely and intended effect being to determine that Republicans hold Congress

/10 The Supreme Court and the institutions supporting it being corrupt doesn't mean that you stop defending accused criminals or suing to get your client what they deserve or fighting for justice in lower courts. When Nazis occupied Paris we didn't raze it, we took it back.

/3 I am no longer inclined to spend time tinkering with the machinery of bigotry. It would be trivially easy to explain under a rules-based system how SCOTUS could come out one way on race in admissions and another in race in detentions. But it's still not worth the effort or the implied respect.

It may sound radical, but if one guy has so much wealth and power that he can use the large newspaper he owns to publicly threaten to ruin a service we all rely on, presumably as a bargaining tactic to get lower rates, we probably need to tax that guy until he can't do that anymore.

One of the drums I am going to keep beating is that the US needs to submit to the jurisdiction of the ICJ. Right now, we live in a time in which the president is immune and can grant immunity to basically anyone he wants. They are acting accordingly.

Today is World AIDS Day, which the Trump Admin is refusing to commemorate. AIDS was the issue that got me riled up about politics and health policy at a very young age growing up in the SF Bay Area. I re-read And the Band Played On during the pandemic (teaching it again in spring) and it's haunting.
