Everything in this movie is so oversaturated, so gaudy, so extravagant, so overblown, so opulent, so tasteless, so melodramatic. It's constantly approaching sensory overload. This feels at first glance like it should be a tonal clash with the tragedy of the plot, but it's actually perfect.

Not only do I believe Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet is the best adaptation of Romeo & Juliet, I also legitimately believe it's the most faithful to the spirit of the original text. By setting it in the modern day, he removed the conception that this was a thing that could only happen in the past.
