I have gotten heavily into religious scholarship the past couple years. Serious secular scholars of religion do not respect Dawkins etc. not because they're too mean, but because their understanding of religious behavior is both shallow and narrow.

New housing is expensive and not affordable to the poor. But the people who can afford to live in the new building don't keep their old home; they vacate it, which allows someone else to move in. That in turn vacates an affordable home. The affordability benefits of new housing are indirect.

A lot of high cost, liberal cities actually have great programs for getting homeless people into housing, their problem is that their mostly self-inflicted housing shortage generates homeless people faster than they can house them.
