I (last minute) decided to bike to Bedford today (for the first time). And although it wasn’t quite as bad as I thought it would be, it was still an expected level of bad. If my trip was in a protected bike lane for the entire length of the Bedford Hwy, I’d do it way more often.

Rather than come and fix this mess, the bike/scooter company has placed unlock credits on many of the devices in this pile up. Disentangling this mess is definitely not worth $1 to me.

After four years of demolition and construction, Halifax's Cogswell Interchange redevelopment officially opened today. 🎉 I dug out the camera that I used to photograph the highway nearly 10 years ago and took an "after" pic from the same spot. It's satisfying to flip between the two photos.

This morning I walked the kids to school and saw: twelve kids riding their bikes, three kids on scooters (one electric), one parent dropping off two kids on an electric cargo bike, and two parents dropping off single kids on acoustic bikes with extra seats. All in all a very good morning!

There is some irony in this government directive, following their own attempts to limit or remove barrier-protected bike lanes in Toronto and the rest of the province.

After four (?) months of access to my road being closed off, I'm genuinely going to miss this closure. There are 7 kids scootering, riding, and running around our street because there's minimal traffic. We don't normally have it this way! You could say it has radicalized me further.

People think it’s weird that I didn’t really get into biking until I had a child, but this is exactly why.

I’ve mentioned it before but it’s happened again: a very large percentage of our child-related travel is medium-distance trips that don’t line up well with transit (so it’s barely faster than walking) but biking is literally as fast as driving. Bike-friendly cities are family-friendly cities!

Unsurprisingly, studets are back in school, so the Covid hazard has increased. Each infection increases your potential for long-term negative effects, so wear a well-fitted make to protect yourself & others and reduce transmission.

Even if you aren’t masking anywhere else it still makes sense to wear a mask in medical settings & pharmacies because there’s a greater chance of being close to someone contagious & there are more people who are at higher risk in these places. Masking in these settings both protects you & others.

As kid was leaving for school this morning, he asked why I was still in my pyjamas. I told him “I don’t have to work this morning. I haven’t gotten ready yet because I was taking care of other things”. He replied “but don’t forget yourself” and that thought has been with me all day.

A 🧵 of my reflections on
#KidicalMassHfx
. In 2022 (our first season) our Dartmouth ride had ~12 participants. In 2023 we had 76, and in 2024 we had 90. Yesterday, 130 people rode bikes with us in Dartmouth, in support of our kids safety and independence in their communities. 1/6

The CBC article about the antisemitic vandalism in Halifax fails to mention the white supremacist gathering yesterday that was part of an attemped nation-wide event, and the recent anti-trans vandalism. We must make these connections to effectively combat hate & drive it from our communities.

Maybe this should disqualify then from the HRM tourism levy funding they received? In addition to the obvious concerns about Israel; it’s disingenuous to call a closed event a “tourist attraction”.
