The way I see it, the most “potential” exists where the largest group of people, who are the least set in their ways, spend the majority of their time. So, I’ll say: every street immediately outside every HRM school. I think we’d learn a lot about what matters, and how to do things differently.

Every Friday night, volunteers opened our Jr. High school gym. While peers got into drugs & drinking, friends & I played pickup basketball. We built physical & mental health, while solidifying lifelong bonds that still exist decades later. THIS is how you reduce crime rates.

We had 20 kids (and an uncounted number of grown-ups) on the bike bus today, our last one for this school year in #BikeHfx. We had bubbles, freezies, stickers, and #BikeJoy all around. As usual, I was too busy soaking it all up to take any photos.

In a housing crisis of course the appropriate course of action is to forbid any new housing, especially housing that might look different in any way from anything around it. We must keep doing the same things, especially if those things clearly aren’t working.

Almost every time I park my e-bike somewhere public I get questions about it from curious people. That never happens with my other bikes. So many people are interested in what e-bikes can offer them, which makes the moral panic around them all the more infuriating.

Thanks to Woodlawn residents for inviting us! We had a great time talking #KidicalMassHfx and watching kids on bikes take over a suburban parking lot. Sadly, the crumbling cagey overpass you folks use to cross the Circ is a true metaphor for how this city treats folks who get around without a car.

Blew up the Dahlia counts for the day on our way the #BikeHfx Woodlawn Bike Rally this morning. Great turnout! There is demand for better cycling everywhere.

this is generally my beef with LSBs — if a street is this quiet, why does it need any traffic calming at all? either build protected lanes or don’t, but don’t tell me you built bike infrastructure when you built two speed bumps and put up a sign.

One of the best parts of out cycling, just stopping to enjoy the quietness of something like this.

Kid went to his first ever pro sport event today, as a school trip. When I asked him for his highlights, he said: “purple smoke, which they did on purpose!”, his gym teacher’s megaphone, and the fact that he took two different buses to get to/from the game. Can you tell we aren’t sport people?! 😂

This is all I hear every time HRM runs a new road safety education campaign (that and don’t forget your high vis costume to go for a basic walk):

Signs of summer: the Halifax Common pool is open and the bike racks are full. This photo was taken last night when there were <50 people in the pool, and >14 bikes at the racks. 4 of them were cargo bikes that had carried children to the pool!

Here in Nova Scotia those kids & teens will lose their free transit passes, watch libraries close, and have provincial funding towards recreation and active transportation reduced. Stay home and watch grass grow teens because you’re apparently not wanted anywhere online or irl.

i assume banning kids from social media will be accompanied by a huge investment in teen-friendly communtiy spaces (like youth clubs) and social activities? No? Huh.

I don’t have much of an imagination but there are times when I glimpse what’s possible. #KidicalMassHfx is the most tangible way this happens for me. One Sunday a month for 6 months of the year, we go out and create the world that we want. 1/3

Watching this on repeat this evening, and feeling very thankful for our skilled crew of #KidicalMassHfx volunteer ride marshals who moved 150 people on bikes safely through this intersection in less than 2 minutes.

This is unhinged. - Halifax already counts bikes! They have many permanent counters, and the data is public. - I could find you a hundred roads within walking distance of my home that have less than 50 cars per hour. Is anyone questioning whether they should exist?
