Early this week, someone removed the traffic cones at the Harvard/Allan diverter to let cars through. Thanks to Halifax's dedicated
#BikeHfx
community, they have been replaced with an absurd number of varied traffic control devices. There's room for more.

I went through twice this morning to redeploy some cones. The barrels currently at the diverter are in ROUGH shape. I think (at least some) drivers are just driving right thru and pushing the cones that way, based on the scatter & drag pattern I saw today.

Another day, another perfectly reasonable thread in the local Facebook group about the HarvardāAllan diagonal diverter. Despondent motorists, forced to use the next street over, are fleeing the city to their second homes in search of more convenient shopping.

We often underestimate how powerful everyday public space is for children. Hanging out on a safe street corner. Lingering outside a local shop. Talking at a bus stop bench. If we invested in safe, well designed streets, we wouldnāt rely as heavily on formal spaces for children to gather.

My favorite part of Houston's announcement was when he said resource extraction companies are going to come here, set up shop & spend money (before they destroy our environment & hide in tax havens). While ignoring that people who already live, work & spend money here are losing their livelihood.

Tim Houston announcing that he's rolling back cuts to just enough things that folks who don't care about a livable environment, history or arts will be enough to sustain his stupid fucking tax cut. Keep the pressure going, folks, it clearly works. We got some stuff back for some marginalized folks.

The less Nova Scotians know about their past & feel connected to place, the easier it is for a government to redefine conservation areas & penalize people for not aligning use of land with exploitation. History is dangerous, writers in schools are dangerous, artistic critique of power is dangerous.
