Toad shouted and waved, but it was no use. Frog sat on the island. He did not see or hear Toad.

Toad sewed the buttons all over his jacket.

“No,” peeped Frog, who looked very, very small.

Frog closed his eyes when Toad came out from behind the rocks

Toad climbed out of the river. The water dripped out of his bathing suit and down onto his feet.

Frog took the box outside. He shouted in a loud voice, “HEY, BIRDS! HERE ARE COOKIES!” Birds came from everywhere. They picked up all the cookies in their beaks and flew away.

Frog looked out of the window. The snail was not there yet.

“Something covered with sticks and leaves is moving this way!” cried a squirrel.

The snail got to Toad’s house and gave him the letter from Frog. Toad was very pleased to have it.

Toad went to the store. He bought two big ice-cream cones. Toad licked one of the codes. “Frog likes chocolate best,” said Toad, “and so do I.”

“Now we have no more cookies to eat,” said Toad sadly. “Not even one.” “Yes,” said Frog, “but we have lots and lots of will power.” “You may keep it all, Frog,” said Toad. “I am going home now to bake a cake.”

Toad stayed in the bed, and Frog stayed in the closet. They stayed there for a long time, just feeling very brave together.

“Frog, Frog, where have you gone?” Toad was spinning in the dark. “Come back, Frog,” he shouted. “I will be lonely!”

Toad was lying in bed. He had pulled all the covers over his head.

“Toad, Toad, wake up. It is May now.” “What?” said Toad. “Can it be May so soon?”

Frog and Toad sat and watched their kite. It seemed to be flying way up at the top of the sky.

Frog was in his garden. Toad came walking by. “What a fine garden you have, Frog,” he said.

And all the next day Toad played music for his seeds.

“No, no,” said Toad. “I do not think anyone will ever send me a letter.”

“Please,” cried Frog, “please go away!” But no one went away.

“What if Frog is being chased by a big animal with many sharp teeth? What if he is being eaten up?” cried Toad.

Frog and Toad went out to fly a kite. They went to a large meadow where the wind was strong.

“What happened then?” asked Toad.

Good night, Frog.

Toad climbed out of the river. The water dripped out of his bathing suit and down onto his feet.

Then he and Frog ran outside to see how the world was looking in the spring.

He watered his plants.

“Here is your button!” cried Frog. “That is not my button,” said Toad. “That button is black. My button was white.”

Some lizards were sitting nearby. “Does Toad really look funny in his bathing suit?” they asked.

They climbed higher, and they heard a loud noise. Many large stones were rolling down the mountain. “It’s an avalanche!” cried Toad.

What you see is the clear warm light of April. And it means that we can begin a whole new year together, Toad.

All the next day Toad sang songs to his seeds.

“Me too,” said a field mouse. “I have not seen anything funny in a long time.”

Then they sat in the shade of a large tree and ate their chocolate ice cream cones together.

When Toad woke up in the morning, he put the hat on his head. It was just the right size.

“Don’t worry,” said Frog. “We will go back to all the places where we walked. We will soon find your button.”

“I walked in the meadow. Soon I came to another corner. I went around the corner to see if spring was there. “

Frog and Toad sat close by the fire. They were scared. The teacups shook in their hands. They were having the shivers. It was a good, warm feeling.

“Turtle,” said Frog. “You will have to go away.” “Why should I?” asked the turtle. “Because Toad thinks that he looks funny in his bathing suit, and he does not want you to see him,” said Frog.

So the toad went to bed and the frog got up and told him a story. The end.

Toad went to Frog’s house. He found a note on the door. The note said, “Dear Toad, I am not at home. I went out. I want to be alone.”

“Frog,” said Toad, “this kite will not fly. I give up.” “We must make a second try,” said Frog.

Frog sat by the pond waiting for Toad. A mouse ran by. “I just saw something awful!” cried the mouse. “It was big and brown!”

“How soon?” asked Toad. “Quite soon,” said Frog.

“Now I can save tomorrow for something that I really want to do.” “What is that?” asked Frog. “Tomorrow,” said Toad, “I can just take life easy.”

“Frog, can you be as wonderful as this?” said Toad as he danced all over the stage. There was no answer.

Toad looked at the sunshine coming through the window. “Frog,” he said, “I am so glad that you came over.” “I always do,” said Frog.

“You must have been tired,” said Toad. “I was tired,” said Frog, “and it started to rain.”

We will skip through the meadows and run through the woods and swim in the river.
