Remember, Democrats have repeatedly advanced measures to ban partisan gerrymandering and Republicans have voted against them time after time. This is the game Republicans wanted to play. OK, then.

From my perspective, I think gerrymandering is bad, but I read these sorts of retaliatory gerrymandering efforts as an attempt to force a kind of nation-wide gerrymandering mutual disarmament, which is certainly the outcome I would want to see.

It is not an accident that the current wave is a bunch of R legislatures slamming through double down gerrymanders as D states ask voters to temporarily waive nonpartisan redistricting reforms.

Aside from who started it, states like CA and VA putting a counter-gerrymander up to a referendum, where people are told and can make a decision on the context for why it's being done, has vastly more democratic legitimacy than state legislators rushing it through because they got bullied by POTUS.
