One of my fave books as a kid was The Red Pony by John Steinbeck. Someone gave it to me because I loved horses & it had a kid on the cover, but it was very much not like the genteel horse girl/gymkhana books I usually got given. It devastated me every time I read it, but it felt so big and serious.
