This is my effort to collect in one place the top 3 reasons (imho) why 'the free market' should not even be a starting point for analysis - especially normative (legal,policy) reasoning. Also includes a brief account of how the modern idea of the self coordinating market emerged in fits and starts.

1. Market demand cannot serve as even a notional tally of social benefit, because it is irreducibly constituted in part by differential ability to pay. This isn't an external criticism about distributive justice: it's an internal problem w/ achieving allocative efficiency on the theory's own terms.

2. The gap between ideal competition & real competition (rivalry) demonstrates the problem with the *type* of abstraction the self-coordinatimg market idea is. Contemporary competition law both shapes actual rivalry and (incompletely) takes ideal competition as a guide: it helps to illustrate this.
