Actually the Republicans have already destroyed the legitimacy of our republic, I'm sorry. We will defeat them or they will defeat us, it is what it is.

The three dissenting justices have the goods: "...today the majority has broadened the meaning of the word 'election,' as used in the Virginia Constitution, to include the early voting period. This is in direct conflict with how both Virginia and federal law define an election."

The most important reason why Democrats should refuse to capitulate to these illegal and illegitimate acts like what just took place in Virginia is because capitulation only reinforces the belief that politics is futile, which in turn increases the probability that people will turn to violence.

Ignore the VA Supreme Court and you risk a legitimacy crisis. But capitulate and you risk telling everyone that voting no longer matters and that change will only come by taking matters into your own hands. The latter is a billion times worse than the former.

Why shouldn't Virginia Governor
@abigailspanberger.com
announce something like "the Supreme Court just ruled that state governments can redistrict, multiple Republican-controlled states already are, and the people of Virginia indicated they want us to, so that's what we're going to do," then do it?

the people control the state of affairs in a free society, the job of the judiciary is to uphold rights and interpret law in a way that maximizes human freedom while balancing it against rabid mob justice. this whole thing has become a fucking joke. clerics in robes cannot rule a free country.

powerful democrats for the most part are institutionalists who've experienced career success by conforming to those institutions. trumpism is psychologically crippling to them bc it implies these institutions can fail and you can experience history. they want to experience employee of the month.

Critically, as long as all of the political responses are within the normal range of political responses, people assume that the inciting incident must have been normal tool After all if it was unusual the response would also be unusual! So normal responses just serve to normalize the original act

Very plainly what's going on here is that they don't like the decision by the People of Virginia and have therefore found an excuse to say that it didn't really count This is ultra vires, beyond their authority. It is a usurpation of the sovereignty of the People. It is void.

the reason democracy works so well is that we settle issues via the ballot box. once that avenue dries up because one party wants to entrench themselves in power forever, people start looking for alternatives

Spanberger can say that she thinks the court's ability to weigh in on a constitutional referendum after the fact is non-justiciable and say that the current maps will be in place for the 2026 election. Republicans will challenge that in federal court. A liberal Fourth Circuit panel might side 1/

that the virginia supreme court allowed the referendum to go forward - they could have stopped it - and then ruled this way really gives up the game the only difference between now and then is that the we know the result and they didn't like it
