Trump is making a speech about Iran in less than an hour, and we don't know if he's going to claim that we won the war, or announce that we're sending in ground troops, or to say that they lost Iran, like literally cannot find it anymore, Pete got blackout drunk and lost the maps

If this is where the US ends up, the Trump administration is waving the white flag. Nothing about Iranian nukes, nothing about keeping the Strait open and free, nothing about regime change. A strategic waste and failure of historic proportions.

It's actually becoming offensive how much of what should be clear public communication in a looming crisis is actually campaign messaging about how they won't do what those other guys did during Covid.

"Why don't they just take the bus?" Because if a cleaner misses a 5:30 a.m. connection, they don't just "log on late." They lose a shift. They might lose a client. They lose a day's wages. A "Ghost Bus" is a minor annoyance for some; for others, it's a disciplinary risk.

My grand theory of how the National Party sucks at governing is that because they think they are just naturally better at it, the only thing they feel they need to put effort into is differentiating themselves from the previous govt. If they do that, the results will take care of themselves

I don't think I've ever seen a government experience this much Finding Out in its first term. It's not just bad decisions plus bad luck, but a very specific kind of decisions where they trade away costs that they could blame on Labour for risks that are squarely blamed on them.

One of the pieces of worldbuilding in Peter Hamilton's entertaining & also batshit implausible Night's Dawn trilogy that actually stuck with me was him postulating that if demand for power kept skyrocketing, even with clean electricity the waste heat from its use would cause climate change. Welp.

Spain invested heavily in clean energy over the last 6 years. Now, as gas prices rise, Spain has some of the lowest electricity costs on the continent. In August 2025, Spain used zero coal â just 10 years ago it powered 25% of the country. This is what energy independence actually looks like. đ
