genre romance for decades was allowed to do this, but the trade off was that everyone looked down on it and made fun of it. Now that it's gained mainstream acceptance, the books are way less sexy and fun.

the common factor between this and people who want to ban books in schools is that these are people who don't trust children as readers and thinkers.

When people say they like character based shows, I think what they’re really saying is they like shows that are relationship based. Every show is the story of the relationships between the people on screen and between an audience member & the story. TPTB now routinely cut all that off at the knees 👎🏻

I'm just saying that every generation deserves at least five unhinged SF shows with 22-episode seasons where every character hates the cops so, so much.

In other words, the best form of "AI detection" is your own reading comprehension. The stronger you are as a reader, the easier it is to spot. But the answer will never be some pat "Oh, if it uses the word 'turbulent' it must be AI." That's an easy answer that leads to wrong conclusions.

Very noticeable to me, a sentence-enjoyer, that the negative book reviews that go viral are always some broader criticism of the ideology of the writer or the type of person whom the reviewer imagines likes the work and never engagement with literature as works of art.

Lowkey I think part of the problem with book criticism now is that the market rewards universal positivity or harsh takedowns but not, like, developing a critical ethos and maintaining consistent aesthetic standards.
