For most of oil and gas demand--power, light-duty vehicles, heating buildings--we have good alternatives readily available. The parts that will be harder to replace (chemicals, aviation fuel, &c.) just aren't that big.

These big reserves are how the strait closure has gone on so long without totally catastrophic economic impacts. But this is a trick you can only play once and the need to rebuild these reserves will push up oil prices long after the strait reopens.

First, oil. IEA thinks >10% of global oil supply has been taken off the market since last quarter. In response, maybe 4% of oil demand has disappeared. So that's a big gap.
