I’m not going to lie. I’ve been writing about the War on Terror in its depravity my whole adult life. And the brazen execution of Renee Nicole Good has left me in a state since the moment I watched it.

This is a different Chicago vigil than the one we just attended. With hardly any notice, several happened across the city today:

I mourn for the mother whose life was stolen. I mourn for the child who was orphaned. I mourn for the country that allows masked state-sanctioned agents to intimidate, kidnap, and kill people with impunity.

Growing up, my parents taught me and my sisters that white folks who stand up against white supremacy and domination are always, always, ALWAYS punished and killed alongside the targets of white supremacist domination... this is yet another facet of its violence, and how/why white supremacy endures.

Looking back, everyone will one day realize that all that woke stuff was right. Unfortunately, being right won’t erase the suffering.

Tonight, I was one of more than 200 people who gathered on Chicago’s North Side to mourn Renee Nicole Good. Several people asked me to publish my remarks from the vigil, so I’m sharing them here.

Local people protested, people raised money and showed up for court support. Local press covered what happened which is how folks on here came to know this happened. Local people didn't abandon her.

Look at the hundreds of people in that community in Minneapolis who ran TOWARDS the danger. Look at those who documented in their heads what happened so they could accurately recount it afterwards, look at those currently out protesting. Pay attention & do your part too.

Human brains feed off of negativity. Negative thoughts are easily digested and play in a loop in your mind all of the time. The reality, however, is that there is also A LOT OF GOOD happening every single minute. You have to do more work to pay attention to the good but it's worth it.
