One of the most frustrating things about these times is the naive belief that people in power are unwittingly co-signing or doing/saying authoritarian, hateful things because they’re being coerced or strong-armed, but they’re not. They do/say those things because they believe them and want to.

I think they’re making it very clear how aligned they are to his views that it’s not so much that someone they disagreed with was assassinated — and taking a stand against that kind of violence from that position — but that he was a friend, in politics and personal life. They accept his beliefs.
