With that said, here's the "new" Spirit Lake in October 1980. Rainier in the distance just trying to take your attention away from everything in the foreground. Don't let it.

These are 2 of the photos I took from a Cessna 150 just a couple weeks before this broadcast, late April 1985. One shows the dome as we flew in, the other is the crater wall as we flew around the inside. Not an experience I'll soon forget.

During the 80s, Russell-Robinson and other information scientists would be the bridge between what happened at Mount St. Helens and sharing it with the world. Science communication was still new, but people like Russell-Robinson helped define it. She would retire from the USGS in 2016 after 42 yrs.

@mountsthelens1980.bsky.social My dad was...17 or 18 (not totally sure) and lived in Vancouver. He used to like to tell us about the eruption shaking him out of bed so violently that he woke up when he hit the floor, and the sky going black as the plume spread out.

I remember when Mt. St. Helens erupted. It was a Sunday morning. We were in church and heard what sounded like a massive sonic boom. We were 250 miles away and when we went outside after church it was almost totally dark. That much ash blasted that far that fast. #ghwp
