The relative lack of seismic station density in NE CA increases the time it takes to triangulate origin and quickly calculate magnitude. Seconds matter in a large quake. The quicker 4 stations trigger = faster warning. For this quake there were only 2 stations within 100km of origin.

Due to very warm subtropical origins of this storm, snow levels will be exceptionally high in SoCal (~12k feet, so above even highest peaks) and very high (~8-10k feet) in NorCal, so almost no appreciable snow will fall (and some rain will fall on existing snow). #CAwx

I didn’t realize until yesterday that all of the level one Rivian chargers in Yosemite Valley are free. I took advantage of the spot and topped off while we strolled around the meadows. You don’t get much at 10 kW over several hours, but it tacks n an additional 40-60 mi of range.

An excellent graphic posted on the NWS Fairbanks FB page. Ice fog is not the same as freezing fog. It has to be at least -22F (-30C) before you have true ice fog. Here in Anchorage, it's not uncommon to have fog at 0F - but it is not ice fog. Fog droplets are still liquid at 0F - hence the rime.

Some really fun sands to look at near the confluence of Yosemite Cr and the Merced River (and some cool river features too). I love having my intro students find pebbles and cobbles to determine which intrusive body they being to, and then to compare the sand minerals to the pebble minerals.
