Really excellent piece digging into some of the development of Morrowind. I remember playing it as a teenager and being amazed not only at its strange world, but contradictory theologies and histories. It breathed a real life into the entire setting im not sure I’ve ever seen again in a game.

The "don't rock the boat" mentality is part of societal abuse and passive reaction abuse. It goes everywhere from women being abused in workplaces to homeless people on the street.  Anywhere anyone is abused People feel they have nothing to gain from helping others and everything to lose.

This is a big part of “reactive abuse” (i.e. “reacting”—the term itself is a misnomer), which is, a lot of bystanders will subconsciously or deliberately *benefit* from looking cool, calm, “rational,” next to someone who’s been abandoned to fend for themselves in a hostile setting
