A peer-reviewed study in Biological Conservation reports that China’s 2018 ivory trade ban led to a roughly 50% fall in elephant poaching and a steep drop in ivory seizures. Researchers found no “last-minute rush” before the ban, suggesting consumer demand collapsed

Or, perhaps I should say: I take it as further indication of what liberalism is, a bunch of empty rhetoric about universals that are riddled with holes. People have rights right up until they're the wrong kind of person, at which point all bets are off.

I'm sorry but I just don't take seriously people calling themselves "liberals" but they also believe some people should have to appear before a judge to justify their lives or be forcibly displaced from where they live

European heads of state have been letting desperate people drown in boats for years. They've been giving material support to Israel's ongoing genocide for years. Prefacing your statement with "Maduro was bad" just reveals that your moral reasoning is defective.

Trans kids won't disappear. Just like restricting abortions doesn't stop unwanted pregnancies. All it does is drive people to less safe care and ruin lives. Never, ever fall for the line that transphobia is about protecting women. It is only about hate, it only ever has been about hate.

a lot of the skill (not all) of using coding agents is setting up small tasks with tight feedback loops where the thing can churn until it gets it right. with SOTA tools I pretty much never see the reward-hacking thing people complain about where it will, e.g., just change the test to make it pass

The word ‘head’ is etymologically related to ‘chef’, the head of a kitchen. And to ‘chief’, the head of a group. These are also related to ‘cape’, a headland, and ‘per capita’, literally “by heads” – and yes, to Spanish ‘cabeza’ too. Zoom in on my new graphic to learn all about this word family:

I think this highlights the main issue I have with the social media ban... the algorithm is bad for everyone. It's cooking brains across the globe. Rather than addressing that, they've decided the only solution is to cut off a small section of the population for a few years

Not, "in the eyes". 'In fact' advocating for the enslavement of women, the brutalization of immigrants and abuse of queer folk. When those arguments are moving into fact, it is no longer a mere discussion. French people who merely argued with Nazis were called Vichy.
