Kinda interesting that "I use they/them but please I really really don't mind she/her" and "I use she/her but I really fucking wish I could trust you with they/them" are essentially encountering the same problem but from different directions

The interesting thing about nonbinariness is that it in some ways is a refusal of gendered categories. But in another way, it attempts--either begrudgingly or intentionally--to construct a gendered category, because We Live In A Society in which existence outside of gender is not truly possible

And because gender is socially pushed to be always obvious--on sight, on speech, on mannerism, on name--the construction of category entails a construction of a specific set of archetypes. Think "blue hair and pronouns" or "non-binary = woman who's not on HRT" or "non-binary = named Sock or Frog"

It's not even intentional, per se. But at the same time, being nonbinary is supposed to be all-encompassing and NOT a third gender--that is, it's definitionally resistant to the creation of social category, and therefore impossible to 'clock', and barely usable as a population grouping

Really, existing non-binary archetypes--no judgement on whether they're good or bad--indicate who has been most allowed to present openly as non-binary, as they get subconsciously selected as a representative tendency

IME these archetypes differ by groups. For ex. to me "transfem with cat ears, grungy outfit, and a million pins" reads as quite non-binary, but say five years ago, when I hadn't met that many trans lesbians, I'd have interpreted that presentation as 'binary trans woman' for lack of a better word

Ppl have also spoken at length about the friction between transmasc NBs who prefer a construction of a third-gender category for themselves because inclusion in womanhood is a site of violence, compared to transfem NBs for whom expulsion from womanhood via third-sexing is a site of violence

Competing needs, etc. I think it would be nice if we did differentiate between non-binary-as-expression-of-gender, and non-binary-as-expression-of-alienation-from-gender, between constructive and destructive, because these things, while in some overlap, produce competing and antagonistic processes

i don't know, i've literally bawled over being a lesbian. i've wept. i've sobbed. i'm happier now, living my authentic life, but i sacrificed so so much to do it. i sacrificed support. i sacrificed family. i sacrificed everything. i only get to try again because i have friends this time.

and although i am happier, in love with women, etc, i still have to spend so much time hiding, pretending, being someone else in public. this isnt to say oh being a lesbian is so terrible, but it is to say the hatred and fear i face in my every day life/past is very real and very difficult

i think what's lost in taxonomization for taxonomization sake rather than communicative sake is that it forgets or omits how sexuality is the social dimension of gender(ed desires), and is kind of inextricable from the concept of subcultures or scenes
