God, I find the wide spread tendency to erase American leftist politics and their notable impact on the global struggle so annoying. There’s a notable tendency towards lower case l liberalism in the US and not only does it get hijacked and recuperated by the right but also erased by the left.

Any time you approach social phenomena without any analysis of power dynamics you end up erasing important aspects of reality and help undermine people’s ability to fight oppression because the aesthetics of their methods can be superficially likened to the very oppression they’re fighting.

I will be a forever hater of the term “cancel culture,” a truly epic tool of context collapse and reductionism that has only benefited the powerful. Folks are always using this term to talk about critique of a celebrity and social campaigns against the marginalized like they’re the same phenomenon.

Very few people if anyone can do this level of investigation with every piece of reporting they read. I sure can’t. But I think even doing it a few times can really help build a critical perspective that can protect you from some of the panic a lot of journalists intentionally want to stir in you.

Compare what you read from career journalists and profitable media outlets to anonymous grassroots reportbacks, to your experience within your social scenes, and to how the enemy’s internal messaging differs from their public statements (and oh it does!)

I read a lot of different reporting from journalists and outlets I have varying degrees of distaste for, and take basically none of it at face value. I think the value of reading most reporting these days is as a means to figure out which primary sources to find and analyze myself.

You don't have to do things perfectly or happily today. You can also do them out of spite!
