I’m so glad we’re getting disability reporting from Mother Jones. There are so many things that people without any lived experience of disability don’t even think about and having dedicated reporting to it is a breath of fresh air.

Remote work is the only reason I can even consider working part time at all. I’ve been disabled since 2009. This administration’s attacks on DEI include disabled workers. They are trying very hard to erase the gains made in the last 30 years.

This summer, I wrote about Paul Dama, a Boko Haram survivor and award-winning restaurant manager who had been detained by ICE. Yesterday, after 3+ months in custody, Paul was granted asylum (!!) He's still in detention - DHS has until Oct 23 to appeal.

If my writing about autism does anything, whether it be in my books, my columns or my reported stories, I hope it advances the idea that autistic people are whole human beings as they are with legitimate needs and inner lives that deserve to be told the same as other stories.

I really hope there's a correction on it saying why they edited the story. It was the right thing to do, obviously, but accountability for harmful writings is the right thing too.

Cw filicide I think some reporters really need to learn about the Disabled Day of Mourning. Some parents of autistic kids despise them so much they kill them. This is how deadly ableism (and lack of social supports) can be. Our articles do not need to feed into ableism.

A reminder to follow journalists, today and every day. If you say you're going to have disability representation in an article on a disability topic, interview a disabled person, not a non-disabled parent. Their perspectives don't count as disability representation.

This isn't about me defending Trump, but I think it harms some disabled and older adults when we make mispronouncing words a big deal. Not a moral failure.

I appreciate this. I am not autistic, but I try to be a little bit of a good disability journalist to follow on autism related things.
