It's "interesting" how some people, even in public health, see gender-affirming care as a fringe issue -- exactly how vaccination (and growing opposition to it) was seen a few years ago. GAC is a canary in the coal mine. Like abortion and vaccines, it shows how bodily autonomy is threatened.

I want to share the new OpEd that @jimalwine.bsky.social and I wrote about the dangerous lack of pandemic preparedness in the United States. It doesn’t matter how the outbreak begins. We are not ready, and the only things we can be sure of are death, taxes, and another pandemic.

A new study shows that RFK Jr. using the CDC website to promote vaccine disinformation about autism does indeed have adverse effects on the public’s trust in vaccination. It also undermines trust in the CDC itself. Even if he’s been banned from discussing vaccines, he’s already planted landmines.

DeSantis’ attempt to remove childhood vaccine requirements for school entry has been defeated in Florida…by Republicans, of all things. I think polls showing that most Americans do, in fact, support vaccination and will, in fact, vote against people who are anti-vax are starting to sink in.

Never heard of Nicole Saphier, Trump’s new Surgeon General nominee, until today. I’m guessing a lot of us are about to become experts in the myriad ways in which she is unqualified. A cursory search alone is revealing. A person with no experience in public health should not be Surgeon General.

To be clear about what just happened: The Trump administration sent armed FBI agents to abduct a 78-year-old doctor and former federal public health worker from his home and stripped him because the brainwashed right-wing base, hopped up on a literal conspiracy theory, wants scalps.

Wanted to share an interesting experience. Maxo Vanka was a Croatian artist who created anti-fascist murals on the walls Pittsburgh church in the 1930’s/40’s. They got covered in soot and ash from industry and are now being restored. This one is a mother who lost her son to a mining accident.

As babies my mom pushed us on these streets in a stroller. As kids in the 70s we rode bikes. As a teen in the 80s I ran these roads in the day and roamed them with my friends at night. I got to return to the elementary school I attended 50 years ago to run a 5k in the neighborhood where I grew up.

“We have lost so many exceptional scientists and other employees of HHS…the just decades of institutional knowledge that we have lost is absolutely devastating”. This was my comment about RFK Jr. saying that HHS is now hiring thousands of people after firing thousands of brilliant scientists.

RFK Jr’s performance during his Hearing-o-Rama was a complete disgrace and an unequivocal demonstration of his utter lack of understanding of or respect for any scientific principle. His contempt for the people of this country was palpable. We are all just collateral damage of careless people.

I was a front line nurse through the entire Covid epidemic. I lost friends, coworkers and patients. Fuck you, Secretary Serial Killer.

Tell that to my old next door neighbor who spent pretty much every weekend outdoors doing yard work and camping. He was 59 when he got COVID and passed away two weeks later. He was vulnerable, but definitely not sick. That was about two weeks before the first vaccines rolled out.

Go fuck yourself Bobby, my father didn't have brain stem strokes before he got COVID and stayed in a hospital for a month. You're going to hell you son of a bitch, and hopefully sooner rather than later.

Lol I've got weeks of missed work and lingering fatigue that say otherwise

And a whole lot more people than this didn't die or go to the hospital, but got very very sick, missed work, and in many cases did permanent damage to their immune systems, their lungs, their heart, or their brains. Many had strokes or now suffer from chronic conditions. COVID is not over.

I’ve been doing NIH-funded research for over 30 years and I have never encountered anyone as incompetent as the current HHS secretary 🤦🏻‍♀️
