Far too many people gave Jay Bhattacharya the benefit of the doubt (e.g., former Brown SPH dean Ashish Jha) or vigorously promoted him (e.g., Princeton political scientists Frances Lee and Steven Macedo). Forgivable lapse in judgment? More likely: shared affinities and values, which is far worse.

I have lost friends. I have made enemies. I do not care. I will never accept this as a legitimate form of scholarly conduct. I will spend the rest of my life working to make this unacceptable.

I remain cautiously optimistic that SCOTUS will follow the law. That’s not the point. The point is to cast light on a shameful effort to rewrite the Constitution through judicial fiat.

I am not saying that all law profs should be doing what I am doing. I am saying that this is shameful and those who know it is shameful should be doing everything they can to prevent them from winning. And they should make sure this is never forgotten.

I occasionally come across indignant questioning coupled by demands for substantiation. I offer it. I say, let’s talk. I have noted the lack of actual interest.

I am not smearing. I am saying what has happened because many will not. I don’t need to speculate; all of the above is a part of the public record. But there is also quite a bit that isn’t. It will be known.

If they succeed they will have functionally amended the Constitution and created a underclass subject to state domination. They have no good reason for doing this. The law is not on their side. We will see whether mere power is.

They are doing so w/out any plausible argument from the Constitution’s text or written. They have revised and rewritten and evaded and ignored or dismissed substantive criticism from experts in their field. This is known within the academy. They have been told. They have been refuted. They persist.

I know I’m a broken record on this but: A handful of law profs are engaging in an effort to convince the Supreme Court to accept a reactionary administration’s effort to redefine American citizenship and render countless children stateless.

My personal favorite part of the interview is when Caldwell glosses his opposition to the Civil Rights Act by claiming he’s worried about “freedom of assembly.” He doesn’t mention that he means the segregationist freedom to ensure Black folks are barred from public life. So cowardly.

I would say my online activity is backed up by in person activity, including meeting with the NIH director as one of the public signers of the Bethesda Declaration. I strongly believe in the value of public science and think acting like the destruction of the NIH is inevitable is not helpful.

If people are going to invite Bhattacharya and his set to "discussions", they must at minimum require he take open questions from the audience with press present. Without that the even is net harmful and there should be no invite. Can't see the OP on this thread is as they've apparently blocked me.

I think there’s a big difference between applying for grants you need to do science and pretending the people who are overseeing the destruction scientific infrastructure in the US have something valuable to say

NASEM is largely funded by the federal government so not unexpected they would feature these people. Bhattacharya is the least qualified NIH director who will never be remembered or spoken of in any positive light. We can't kick these people out soon enough.

Scientists are fighting for the future of biomedical research in America right now. So please don’t tell me how sitting down with the architects of the destruction of a decades-old legacy of research in the United States is a good idea.
