The dynamics of this AI race is changing. It was a 3 way race including 2 companies that are cautious about safety risks. Now it is some 5 USA and 2 Chinese, some open models, but on average much less is being done about risk mitigation. International cooperation and regulation seems critical now.

Since I couldn't try Fable for biology, I tried to make a Diablo II inspired web browser game with a story based on a fantasy book series. It nailed the story/theme, not that I have time to play it. Costs aside, you can see how this gets us to hyper personalized entertainment.

Happy to finally share that I will be starting my independent group at the @fmiscience.bsky.social in Feb 2027 in a vibrant new environment. We will use integrative in situ structural cell biology methods to investigate ciliary structure and dynamics in several model (and non-model 👀) systems!!

John Jumper, the lead on Alphafold and Nobel prize winner, is moving from DeepMind to Anthropic. Not a move I would expect but it may signal a strong commitment from Anthropic in further developing their life sciences capabilities.

We've been looking at how to compare and cluster large numbers of genomes, such as those in large isolate databases such as AllTheBacteria, and metagenome assemblies (e.g. SPIRE, MGnify). On a combined dataset of 5.6 million assemblies, we can now cluster/dereplicate everything in under a day!

Here is an example of what I expect we will start seeing more of, a single author bioinformatics paper that looks like it was made with AI assistance. The figures look very much straight out of Claude Code. It does have a "Use of AI tools" disclaimer section journals.plos.org/ploscompbiol...
