why do you write about a country you know so little about? You thought English skills were rare in China. This is beyond embarrassing. The idea that state intelligence would have difficulty evaluating speech in English is laughable. They could just ask a teenager.

The American system of government is unparalleled because if the President ordered his goons to do a Tiananmen Square, a few weeks later a court would be like “actually that was illegal. Totally not cool man”

Hegseth and the GOP continue to cling to the fantasy that the U.S. harbors a vast untapped reserve of lantern-jawed 6-foot-tall blonde, white, Christian heterosexual young men, all of whom will immediately join the military on the condition that it’s purged of queers, women, and non-white people

Again, this is a broad coalition of people across the ideological spectrum whose top concern is making sure everyone rues and laments the “Woke Times” forever. It’s very much akin to the myths around “Negro misrule” in Reconstruction, which justified Jim Crow.

Ted Chiang: "The task that generative A.I. has been most successful at is lowering our expectations, both of the things we read and of ourselves when we write [...]. It is a fundamentally dehumanizing technology because it treats us as less than what we are: creators and apprehenders of meaning."

you live in a place with an ABC network affiliate owed by Nextstar or Sinclair, the Republican megaconglomerates that put the regime up to this decision, watch it for a few hours and write down the advertisers. (In Chicago, that means ABC-7, WGN.) 2/x

History often turns on unexpected pivots. The aspiring dictator has probed the limits of his power by getting a comedian fired. This has been met with significant pushback by both ordinary and powerful people. Tipping points like these can make a difference. 1/x

I say this a lot because I like to remind people how stupid Matt Taibbi is and how dishonest Bari Weiss is but: Remember how the Twitter files were supposed to demonstrate a huge free speech threat posed by Democrats?

I don't have a good answer for what the alternative looks like, but asking 18 years to bet their future on highly specified training for jobs based on which they think will be in high demand 5-10 years from now turned out to be a very bad way to structure higher education

I am no constitutional scholar, but I can't help but feel that "the President gets to dictate what every university can teach and what every television station should broadcast" is closer to what the founding fathers were worried about when it comes to free speech than trigger warnings on syllabi.
