New from me: Just eight of the Government's 17 Roads of National Significance have already seen costs blow out by $5.1 billion - before any shovels are even in the ground. The full programme would cost $44-$54 billion on the latest numbers.

$5b-plus blowout for eight Roads of National Significance
The Government's 17 Roads of National Significance will cost it at least $44 billion – enough to rebuild Dunedin Hospital 23 times over. Marc Daalder reports.

on the one hand, this sounds like it won't raise enough money for them to fund meaningful tax relief for the people struggling the most with the cost of living, but on the other it will be ruthlessly attacked and exploited by their political opponents

I love the bridge but it's a great representation of Wellington's malaise: faded glory that once expressed something vital about the city's identity, but now just costs a fortune to do a bad job when the money could be better spent on 100 other things

Hooton has typically been solid on this stuff, which is why he is persona non grata within the current populist-right movement in ascendance And in this case he's just adhering to the orthodox ACT party line from 2004

At some level it’s hilarious that David Seymour is essentially the thing he hates the most - the bureaucrat stereotype of his imagination. He obsesses over petty things, setting up an entire wasteful ministry in pursuit of imagined waste, creates busy work, pushes his ideology into law …

This is one where I wonder if his Aussie background contributes; when you grow up with compulsory voting and an always extended process for a final preference count (especially in the Senate), the alleged concerns about speed & cavalierness about letting people vote must seem absurd (& they are).
