It's worse than that Craig. The timing is precisely to make it look like the doctors going on strike tomorrow are doing so in bad faith with the govt is doing everything it can to fund NZ healthcare. It's total bad faith, imho.

This is not good policy, nor targeted spending. It’s just a press release trying to distract people from the very real problems in health. Our health system needs real solutions and real funding - to properly support health workers across Aotearoa. Not more spin.

Rather than pretend $20m is going to make any difference (it represents 0.06% of health funding), the Minister could recognise the government underfunded health to begin with. He could pay nurses and doctors properly - rather than fight them.

Importantly, the Minister states “Hospitals will be able to recruit additional doctors, nurses, and support staff” with this money. I’m assuming that will only be on nine month contracts as that is all the funding that is available. Is that really solving the problem?

$20m represents $3.77 each, or $20 per patient - there are about 1m A&E visitations each year. What happens after the nine month period of funding? The baseline represents cost pressure funding that goes to Health. The Minister should state what has been cut from to pay for it
