Especially for ultra rare diseases, there's so much institutional knowledge that's lost when a single scientist suddenly no longer works at NIH.

Crazy how "screw you, got mine" was not a viable strategy for academic workers to engage in collective action against a common adversary. Much to think about here.

In 2016 and into 2017, the only thing the media had to say about Trump's mental state was that it would be wrong and unethical for the media to assess it or report on the implications for the country because "we're not experts." That of course implies that they shouldn't report on anything.

This is only related in a sideways manner, but: the story of any small slice of humanity is the story of humanity, just boiled down and distilled. So: In 2020, we had a lot of conversations about harassment at SF/F conventions, and Isaac Asimov came up several times.

I just generally think the antidote to dooming and feelings of helplessness is getting involved in any way. It can be as a poll worker, doing ICE watch, running for local office, helping with mutual aid, whatever. You can get so much accomplished in your town or city if you just get involved.
