Science friends, life is difficult now, but please still try to peer review papers if you can. I'm the editor handling a paper that just had it's 43rd person decline to review. We may have to reject it because no one is willing to review it, which sucks for the authors.

Everyone is acting like US scientists will just go get science jobs elsewhere and sure some will but there are not anywhere close to enough science jobs elsewhere. The end result of this will be much, much, much less science, not science happening in different places.

I just got the notice that all the FlyBase people at Harvard, including me, will be laid off on October 12. I'm devastated.

This is not just HHMI. All Chan Zuckerberg Initiative funding calls are CLOSED. The Gates Foundation has no Grand Challenges funding opportunities. I've never seen anything like this. Private foundations have just decided to stop supporting biomedical research.

What I would like to remind everyone talking about Sam Altman talking about the “PhD level intelligence” of the new ChatGPT is that Sam Altman dropped out of college so he… has no experiential construct for what grad school even is.

Likening PhD holders to a (non-functional) algorithm is a form of dehumanisation & anti-intellectualism that is a bellwether for contemporary fascism. Essentially it's a typical — if not the archetypal — first step towards fascism: to dehumanise, deskill, defund, and, ultimately, fire the academics.

I guarantee GPT-5 doesn’t lie awake at night worrying about how to fund its doctoral students.

7. Training, meanwhile, becomes impossible. In the US, earning a PhD takes 5 years or more. Every student I have ever trained has been supported on federal funds that they were directly awarded or from grants that I won. If I can't guarantee to pay, I can't take students. It's that simple.

The results were encouraging so risky and expensive human studies were initiated. The results have been mixed but disappointing Does she think that these efforts were entirely based on misleading results from mouse models? Would she prefer that human studies should be be started directly? 16/n
